Myths About Precision CNC Machining

Part Two

We are continuing our series on myths about precision CNC machining.  Unfortunately, there are false beliefs about CNC machining that prevent some people from seeking quality machine shop services.  Our previous article addressed the myth that precision CNC machining is not cost effective for prototyping.  We busted this myth by discussing how advancements in 3D rendering allow for the virtual production of parts and ultimately help save time and materials. We also pointed out how milling turning errors can be quickly identified and corrected and how a single machinists can perform concurrent production of multiple prototypes.  Let’s take a look at another myth about precision CNC machining:

Myth: Precision CNC machining requires long lead times for set-up.

The Facts:

  1. Advancements in 3D rendering technology has significantly reduced the set-up time required for all types of CNC machining, including milling turning, laser engraving, close tolerance machining and small parts machining.
  2. Precision CNC machining allows for instant crosschecking of data and operations, thus quickly identifying any potential conflicts before the job is ever placed on the machine.
  3. Advancements in software technology has greatly reduced the programing set-up time necessary to manufacture new parts.

Part three of our series will discuss the myth that precision CNC machining has limited capabilities.
