Common Myths of Precision CNC Machining

Part One

There are many myths that circulate about precision CNC machining.  Our next series of articles will discuss common myths and outline facts to discredit those myths.  Our first topic covers the common misunderstanding that precision CNC machining is not a cost effective option for producing prototypes.

Myth: Precision CNC machining is not cost effective for prototyping.

The Facts:

  1. Advancements in 3D rendering allow for virtual production of parts, thus eliminating the need for costly live production.  Machine shops use precision CNC machining when producing prototypes because it saves time and material while achieving an accurate and viable prototype.
  2. Any errors in milling turning operations can be identified and changed in minutes and often without starting over on a new piece of material.
  3. A single machinist can set up, operate and monitor several machines at the same time, allowing for concurrent production of multiple prototypes.

Our next article will address the common myth that precision CNC machining requires longer than normal lead times.
