Why CNC Machining?

Precision CNC machining

Why CNC Machining?

The primary purpose of using computer numerical control (CNC) is tool control, which produces a more accurate end result.  A CNC machine shop relies on tool control for processes such as milling turning, close tolerance machining, small part machining, laser cutting, laser etching and laser engraving. Precision CNC machining allows for the rapid and accurate changing of tool angles, speed and position. Thus, many machine shop / machining operations which were once impossible are now possible. Let’s take a closer look.

Precision CNC Machining and Tool Position Changes

Computer controlled servo motors can position a tool in seconds.  The operation is completed by conducting thousands of calculations to determine the position of the tool in relation to the piece. A CNC machine shop can save thousands of hours of production time because the tool and/or piece can be maneuvered into place in seconds instead of minutes as is required with a manual machine.

Precision CNC Machining and Speed

Instantaneous changes to turning speeds calculated by CNC machinery allow for high speed roughing of a part to occur on the same machine that performs the final cuts.  Precision CNC machining eliminates the need for manual changing of machines, motor settings, or gear ratios, thus adding to the hours of production time saved.

Precision CNC Machining and Measurements

Stopping and starting a machine slows the process and can actually lead to inaccuracy. Precision CNC machining allows for continuous measurements and ensures absolute accuracy without stopping the machine.
