Featured Precision CNC Machining Process: Laser Engraving

Our next series of articles will highlight one of the most commonly used precision CNC machining processes in many prototypes to production manufacturing and contract manufacturing projects: laser engraving.  Laser engraving is a method which is used to create permanent markings on parts and components. Sometimes these markings are for branding purposes (i.e., logo, company name, etc.). Other times, parts are marked for identification purposes (i.e., part name, part number, serialization, codes, etc.) Sometimes industry-specific regulations require that certain permanent identifications be present.

Laser engraving is a precision CNC machining process that uses a high quality concentrated beam of light, or laser, to “engrave” images and/or information directly into the part.  The laser removes some of the surface material to create a permanent depression.  Laser engraving is a very versatile process that can be utilized on a vast range of materials including rubber, plastic, ceramic, glass, and metal. Laser engraving is resistant to fading and can often withstand even the most extreme conditions.

Now that we have discussed what the laser engraving process entails, our next article will cover some industries that utilize laser engraving in their prototypes to production manufacturing and contract manufacturing projects.
