Precision CNC machining services such as CNC milling, CNC turning, laser cutting, laser engraving, small part machining and close tolerance machining are what come to mind when most people think of a machine shop. However, parts and components finishing is another machine shop service offered by many precision CNC machining facilities. Our next series of articles will look at common types of finishing services.
Case Hardening
Case hardening is a process that makes the surface of a metal part or component hard while allowing the interior to remain in its original state. As a result, the surface has superior wear resistance while the interior is able to absorb stress. Examples of case hardening processes includes nitriding, flame hardening, and carburizing.
Burnishing
Burnishing creates a mirror finish of a part or component. This forming type of finishing process is used for a variety of purposes including promoting fewer visual defects, reducing fatigue failure, and promoting better corrosion resistance.
Black Oxide
Black oxide is a popular finishing that utilizes a conversion coating to turn the surface of a part or component black. It is most often used for appearance but has other advantages including reduced light reflection and better resistance to corrosion.
