Precision CNC Machining Material Spotlight: Aluminum Alloys

Not all aluminum is the same. There are different types of aluminum alloys that can be used in the precision CNC machining process. An aluminum alloy is aluminum mixed with another element such as magnesium, copper, or iron.

The machine shop experts at JW Machine are extremely knowledgeable in material options and can help you choose the right aluminum for your contract manufacturing and/or prototypes to production manufacturing project. Our next series of articles will highlight various types of aluminum alloys. We’ll get started with non-heat treatable aluminum.

Non-heat treatable aluminum alloys are commonly used in the production of aerospace parts and components, roofing material, fuel tanks, marine parts, appliances, and even commercial cooking equipment. Examples of non-heat treatable aluminum alloys include aluminum 5052 and 3003. Aluminum 5052 is very strong and corrosion resistant. Aluminum 3003 is close to pure aluminum and is a common and frequent material used in the precision CNC machining process.

Our next article will discuss heat treatable aluminum alloys.
