Precision CNC Machining and Metals

Part Two

Metals play a significant role in many precision CNC machining processes, including milling turning, laser cutting, laser engraving, laser etching, close tolerance machining and small part machining. We are continuing our series on common metals used in a machine shop environment.  Our previous article covered aluminum and copper.  This article will take a closer look at magnesium and flat metals.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a strong, low density metal that yields an impressive surface finish. Working with magnesium requires advanced skills and knowledge because it can be combustible during the precision CNC machining process. The expert machinists at JW Machine understand how to work with this very versatile material. Magnesium is commonly used in small part machining and close tolerance machining.  Examples of products made of magnesium include airplane parts and automotive parts.

Flat Metals

Flat metals are those that are pressed into flat pieces and used for various precision CNC machining projects. Some of the most popular flat metals include leaf metal for conductive circuits (often made of gold or silver and are very thin), sheet metal used for auto body, containers and art, and plate metal for mounting brackets, structural bracing, and supports.

Our next article will discuss some of the different types of steel used in precision CNC machining.
